2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen Tiguan Review

The Volkswagen Tiguan is one of only two compact SUVs to offer an optional third row of seats (the other being the Mitsubishi Outlander). All models come with the same 184 hp four-cylinder engine

Volkswagen Tiguan 2021 specifications

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is characterized by its fuel economy, the Volkswagen Tiguan is a good competitor to competitors such as Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. While Tiguan offers some of the same sharp driving dynamics that make us face the majority of the Volkswagen Group, its practicality is what makes it really worth buying

Volkswagen has made some changes to the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan. The base S and SE receive new 17-inch wheel designs and the latter two receive a standard adaptive cruise control. Likewise, the high-spec SEL Premium R-Line gains the electrically adjustable front passenger seat

Choosing a Tiguan trim is only about features and convenience equipment, as there are no powertrain options. The jump from SE to SEL is a significant one, adding about $5000, but all the extra features it adds, including a panoramic sunroof, remote start, power liftgate, and larger 18-inch wheels, may be worth it to you. Adding all-wheel drive, which is available on any trim, adds roughly $1300 on the SEL, but makes the third row optional. If you're in the business of hauling kids, we'd spend the extra money to make the Tiguan a seven-seater.

Engine, transmission and performance in the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

Under the hood of the Volkswagen Tiguan is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 184 hp. Front-wheel drive is standard but Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive is optional. The retention of the eight-speed automatic transmission at low speed combined with the noticeable turbo lag means the Tiguan feels nothing but passion off the line and a bit of laziness around town. The Tiguan ride is comfortable and compatible, which should please most drivers, but the swap is less precise during fast driving. The front-wheel-drive Tiguan we drove was easily disturbed by bumps on the road, but the four-wheel drive models were noticeably better at managing highways littered with potholes and side roads

Interior, comfort and freight of a 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan

The interior of the Volkswagen Tiguan is the same as a classic Volkswagen, meaning that it is simple and functional but not particularly elegant or rich. Others offer more legroom in the second row, but the Tiguan is one of the only vehicles in the class that can seat seven. Tiguan comes standard with cloth seats and partial electric adjustment of the front seats. Choosing the more expensive versions can achieve full-power driver adjustment, faux leather seats and panoramic sunroof. With a payload space of just 12 cubic feet behind the third row, the Tiguan couldn't be just a towing vehicle when the third row is in use. With the third row folded, Tiguan's cargo metrics put him in the middle of that class for raw space. With all seats folded down, we have installed 19 Tiguan carryboxes, which is fewer than what we put inside major competitors including the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue

Information, entertainment and communication Volkswagen Tiguan

The Volkswagen infotainment system is elegant and features touch buttons integrated into the large glass screen. The system comes standard with Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, so drivers who prefer their familiar smartphone interface over the Volkswagen system. A 480-watt, nine-speaker Fender audio system is also available, but only on the top of the SEL Premium model
