Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ Our First Real Look at the Next-Gen

Toyota and Subaru cooperative sports coupe

Ever since Subaru confirmed to us in 2018 there would be a replacement for its much-loved BRZ sports coupe, we've been on the edge of our seats waiting to see what it will look like. Thanks to this spy video shot by Instagram user Kystify and shared by Matt Maran Motoring on Youtube, it seems we've finally got our wish

Toyota GR86 2022

The video in question is only a few seconds long and shows what appears to be a next-generation 86 test or BRZ test on a busy city street. The dimensions of the car are not much different from the current model, which, according to various reports, has just finished production. The front and rear fascias are the biggest innovations in terms of design, with the prototype featuring a cleaner, less rigid nose and a completely reworked rear end with a flange spoiler integrated into the trunk

This clip was filmed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where a Toyota engineering facility is located. Seeing the next-generation 86 tester nearby makes sense

While confirming the production of the car, it was still not known for sure what would be under the hood. Like the last-generation car, it will be a collaboration with Toyota and Subaru, and it is expected to receive a flatbed four-wheel drive - most likely a version of the 2.4-liter FA24 currently in use on Subaru Ascent. In this application, the engine is turbocharged, although a report from Japanese seating company Best Car earlier this year indicated that the 86 and the BRZ will have a naturally aspirated version

Earlier rumors suggested a launch date sometime in the spring of 2021, so we'll have to wait until then to be sure.
